Have you been wondering what I've been up to?
I have been doing my share of deep couch sitting - I mean, it's the Olympics and all.
Except for the two and a half weeks I spent traveling and visiting in Oklahoma in July, I have been spending at least part of three days a week at Mimi LaRou Designs in Roseville, Michigan.
My friend, Sarah LaRou Rozewicz, is the creator and owner of Mimi LaRou.
Sarah has her hands in a lot of pots. She does interior design, custom furniture painting, and also floral design. All of this creativity used to take place in her home.
Her ambitions outgrew her dining room and she began looking for a way that she could get her projects off her dining room table, floor, garage, etc.
After a few months of searching, and a series of fortuitous events she ended up here - 28063 Gratiot, Roseville, Michigan. It's a magic little place where Sarah now has an office, a store, and a working "studio" for two or three other creatives who want to get their projects off the dining room table.
It's the coolest spot ever. The original building was a feed store and dates back to the 1800's. It even had train tracks right in front of it.
This picture was taken in 1921. They tell us that the building still contains the original hardwood floors, tin ceiling, and lighting. It's a great space for a store/studio/office.
Slowly, but surely it's being filled with goodness.
A good percentage of what she carries is created by local artists/businesses. It's kind of crazy how much cool stuff is made here locally. See that terrarium in the picture above? Two local guys make those. They are magnificent.
You can also find the full line of Detroit GT products - T-shirts for both genders, tanks, hoodies, onesies, mugs, shot, glasses, beer glasses, and stickers. These are great for gifts. Actually, they're great to get for yourself as well.
And best of all, I've been painting furniture - mine to sell, and a few commissions, since March.
Or was it April?
Anyway . . .
I don't know how many of you guys might be local, but if you are, I'd love for you to stop in and say hello!
You can find specific hours on the Mimi LaRou facebook page. There are limited summer hours, but hours will be expanding in the fall. Even if you're not local check out facebook, say hi, and that Karen sent you!
Oh, Oh, Oh!
And last Friday she got her first paint shipment!
Sarah tried out no less than 492 kinds of paint and finishing products. Belle Craie was one of her favorites and the one she decided to carry. I can't wait to try it out. Soon.
I will be sharing more about store "goings-on" as time goes by, especially on my Somewhat Quirky facebook page.
